What is AI, Really?

Strip away the movie robots and the breathless headlines, and what's left is something you can understand in one page — and start using in ten minutes. Let's clear the fog first.

The one-sentence definition

Artificial Intelligence is software that can do tasks which normally need human judgement — like writing, summarising, translating, answering questions, or recognising what's in a photo.

That's it. Not a robot. Not a digital brain. Not a being with plans of its own. Software — like your email app or your calculator — but for a category of tasks that, until recently, only people could do.

The AI everyone is talking about right now is a specific kind: chatbots like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. You type (or speak) to them the way you'd message a person, and they answer. Almost everything in this playbook is about getting real work out of these chatbots — because they're free to start, they need zero setup, and they're genuinely useful on day one.

The assistant who read everything

Imagine an assistant who has read a staggering share of everything humans have ever written — books, newspapers, websites, manuals, forum arguments. They've never stepped outside, never seen a sunset with their own eyes. But they've read so much that they can discuss nearly any topic, draft nearly any document, and explain nearly any idea — fluently, instantly, and in your language.

They have one flaw: they sometimes state things that are wrong with total confidence, like a brilliant student who'd rather guess than admit they don't know. Keep both halves of this picture — astonishingly capable, occasionally confidently wrong — and you already understand AI better than most people.

Why is this suddenly everywhere?

AI research is over 70 years old, so why did the whole world start talking about it in late 2022? Because that's when ChatGPT launched, and for the first time three things came together at once:

  • It understood normal language. No commands, no menus, no code. You just… talk. That single change threw the doors open to everyone.
  • It was genuinely good. Earlier chatbots (remember the useless ones on shopping websites?) could only follow scripts. This one could write a decent essay, explain tax rules, or debug a recipe.
  • It was free to try. A hundred million people signed up in two months — the fastest adoption of any technology in history.

Since then the tools have improved at a startling pace, and today they can also see images, hear speech, search the web, and produce pictures, spreadsheets, and working apps. But the core interaction hasn't changed: you ask in plain language, it answers in plain language.

Where chatbots fit in the AI family

"AI" is a big umbrella term, and news articles use it loosely for very different things. Here's the family tree, so the jargon never surprises you:

Two terms from that diagram are worth pinning down, because you'll meet them constantly:

  • Generative AI — AI that creates new content (a poem, a picture, a plan) instead of just recognising or sorting existing content. The name literally means "AI that generates".
  • LLM — short for Large Language Model. This is the engine inside every chatbot: a gigantic statistical model of language, built by processing an enormous amount of text. When someone says "the model", they mean this engine.

What AI is not

Half the fear and half the hype come from a few stubborn myths. Let's retire them:
